If you're an adult who has enough spare time so that you can be accurately called an otaku, in all likelihood you're a NEET as well.

No. A NEET is someone who never leaves their home, who doesn't have a job in society and actively shuns interactions with others. They're pretty much introverted hermits. Otaku are just people who are passionate about their hobby.

Ah, that's what a NEET is. Don't forget that they also live on takeouts and welfare.

from dictionary.com

"an avid collector or enthusiast, esp. one who is obsessed anime, video games, or computer and rarely leaves home"

It's more than being passionate, it's charactarized as obsessive. An adult with a decent paying job and a functional social life wouldn't have enough time to dedicate to anime/video games where they would really fall under that classification, at least by most standards I'm aware of.

From someone who has actually experienced and researched these things, as well as having actually been to Japan.
