Technically, Speed Racer.

The first anime I ever WANTED to sit down and watch because "those japanimation cartoons are awesome" was Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. The dub version I watched was called G-Force. I loved it. People were BLEEDING. Wicked awesome for a 6 year old yo.

The first anime I vaguely remember watching was the original Astro Boy. I think Speed Racer as well.

But the first anime I really got into was the original Dragon Ball.

The first anime I ever watched was actually a Jack and the Beanstalk movie from the 70's. (wiki article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_and_t ... (1974_film) )

It was obviously a time before I knew what anime even was. And I didn't really know that it was Japanese/anime until many many years later when I started watching anime like DBZ or Sailor Moon that I realized that these things look like that Jack and the Beanstalk movie.

A similar thing happened to me. When I was a kid, I used to watch the Spanish dub of a Robin Hood anime. Robin Hood no Daiboken is called (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood ... b%C5%8Dken), but it took me years before I realized it was anime, and longer to found out its Japanese name. How I wish I could watch it again, but it's very hard to find.

There was also a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs anime that is actually worth watching. Good luck finding it, though. It's called Shirayuki Hime no Densetsu, or The Legend of Princess Snow White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend ... Snow_White). I remember there being a part where the prince goes all Zelda II and fights the Queen to awaken Snow White.

Both series were made by Tatsunoko, if that means anything to anybody.

If I remember correctly it was either Pokemon or NGE. Close to that wera also Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. Do Moomins count as an anime? If it does then that takes the cake.
