Over the course of sixty years of anime created in Japan I can almost assure you atleast one has.

I don't know if they get canceled but I do know some times they just end.... which always sucks for fans. They usually end when the manga they were following ends or if the creators just don't feel like making it anymore.

Yes.

You may have noticed some anime end with a cliffhanger while others have cliffhangers but also have endings.

Now you know why.

I suspect it has more to do with how many seasons they air. Usually it's 13 or 26 episodes, and they have to tell a complete story within that limit.

I know that His and Her Circumstances was canceled after two seasons, because the author of the manga didn't like the direction that Gainax was planning to take the series, so to answer your question yes, anime are sometimes canceled prematurely.

Neon Evangelion was nearly canceled. But instead of outright canceling it they reduced their budget by a lot, which is probably why the last episodes were so creative.
